Itinerary description
Walk through ancient forest along Roman dykes. You could start this at Gosbecks Car Park, in which case go up Grymms Dyke and turn left to Stanway Green which would take three miles off the total.
Pub at Birch (Hare and Hounds, call ahead to check they are open and serving food). On a good day the view over Abberton Reservoir and across the Blackwater Estuary is amazing. Fridaywood is almost empty now that the army has closed the car park. At Layer de la Haye, if you turn right at the main road another pub is available (The Donkey and Buskin, phone ahead again). Back via Chest wood and Gosbecks Archaelogical Park.
