Itinerary description
This tour to Skelton Tower starts and finishes in the village of Levisham, where at the top of the village, is the Horseshoe Inn, which also serves meals. There is a reasonable amount of on-street parking in the village.
The way begins along Little Field Lane, but a path off on the right at a sharp left hand bend is soon met. At this time of year the path ran beside a waving field of ripening barley. The path then goes to the right and starts a gradual descent giving fine views over the countryside.
The terrain flattens out and eventually the ruined Skelton Tower can be seen in the distance. The path leads right up to the tower and from there looking down can be seen the track of the North Yorks Moors Railway. If you time your arrival at the tower, you will be rewarded by seeing one of the NYMR trains running on the rails in the valley. The tower also seems to be a good place for a refreshment break.
I carried walking along Levisham Bottoms before almost doubling back on my tracks to take the path through the bracken up the bank. In some places, the bracken is head high and close to the path, so if you do not like bracken, Spring is probably the best time to do this tour. However, in late July the ling is starting to flower and soon this will be followed by the blossoming heather.
The going is flat after the top of the bank is reached and the way leads to Braygate Lane which gently descends and brings you back to the village.
The tour is memorable for the superb views and the interesting ruins of Skelton Tower which provides a focus for the tour.
