Itinerary description
This circular tour based on the village of Levisham, where there is ample on-street parking, is designed to see the trains of the North Yorks Moors Railway. The village is very attractive with a few working farms along its main street and boasts a very popular pub called ‘The Horseshoe.’
The tour lead out from the village on the lane to the right of the pub and carries on straight when it meets the moor. The first point of interest is Dundale Pond, though in truth there is not a lot to see here.
The path then bears round to the left and leads to the top of an escarpment where there is quite a steep descent to meet the road to the station. Wonderful views of the surrounding countryside can be had from this vantage point.
A path can be seen on the other side of the road that cuts the corner off and saves some walking time, but the road is eventually rejoined down to the station. I found it took about 45 minutes to get from the village to the station. It takes about 15 minutes for the NYMR train to travel from Pickering to the station, so that should give you an idea of when to leave the village if your aim is to see one of the trains.
Then, it’s back up the road for a few metre before taking a path to the right that goes up a hill through trees, then across a field with sheep before climbing over a stile to turn right along a bridleway.
Thirty minutes along this bridleway will bring you to a point where you have a clear view of the railway track. The train towards Pickering is always engine first, while the one to Levisham and beyond is tender first.
You need to look out for the bridleway back to Levisham: it is on the left and just past a gate. It is marked with a sign and goes off diagonally left towards the trees. This bridleway eventually brings you to Littlefield Lane and so on back to Levisham.
