Itinerary description
Le Morne is beautiful, imposing and has a lot of history.
After a 3km drive along a very bumpy mud track we reached the carpark, signed in and walked up the easy but steep path to the base of the very steep incline. On the way up a guide on the way down warned us not to go past the "Green Gate" without a guide otherwise we would be fined 10000 rupees each (£260). The gate is padlocked but easy to jump the fence. We didn't but wish we had. Later on our holiday we found this to be a scare tactic, probably to keep the LeMorne guides in business.
I've hiked / scrambled up many mountains in the UK, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and France which don't do this. A strong warning sign would be sufficient but it is obvious just looking at the ascent that this should not be attempted by novices. Maybe the reason is that it is a World Heritage Site but that is no reason to charge extortionate guide fees, the cost I saw was 49 Euro for a half day trip. We used a guide for the 7 cascades and the Cat and Mouse and this was 500 rupees each (12 Euro).
The walk up to the green gate still has great views, this is a simple well marked route and you most definitely do not need a guide.
