Itinerary description
Le Morne Brabant
It is an iconic trail in Mauritius throughout a UNESCO World Heritage Site with amazing views of the southwestern part of the island. The mountain rises to a height of 556 meters above sea level. It is named after the Dutch East India Company ship Brabant that ran aground here on 29 December 1783. The mountain was used as a fortress to shelter escaped slaves, maroons, through the 18th and early years of the 19th centuries. It became a symbol of slaves’ fight for freedom.
Trail
Segments:
P-01 - P-14. The trail is straightforward to follow. It is well laid and wide till P-14. You will see a couple of nice viewpoints at P-12 and P-14.
P-14 -P-21. At P-14 you will see a warning sign saying that the trail is becoming more difficult and should not be attempted by inexperienced climbers. The trail here is narrow and a bit steep.
P-21 - Top. It is a climb where you have to use your hands to reach the top with the cross.
Difficulty and Alternatives
I mark it as moderate. People, who are new to hiking, can do the trail till P-14 since it still offers a couple of nice viewpoints before reaching the top. If you are going to continue after P-14 make sure you have proper hiking shoes. I saw many people wearing ordinary sneakers and struggling while descending. It is a very popular trail, I saw dozens of hikers there. Not advisable with kids after P-14. Also, it is not advisable to go after P-21 after rain. For people who do not hike regularly this part can be difficult, especially for descending. In May 2022 I did not see any attached ropes for assistance.
Parking
A parking location is -20.460025, 57.327524. It is a dirt road from B9 to the parking location but sedans can do it.
Must-have gear
1) High-cut hiking shoes
2) 2+ liters of water, electrolytes
3) Sun protective clothing or sunscreen cream (there is no shade after P-21)
4) windbreaker depending on the weather
Recommended gear:
1) Gloves (useful after P-21)
2) mosquito repellent

I am afraid of heigh and I was one of the people who gave up in the middle of the cliff part which is showing on the picture 35.
Still the view is beautiful and it is definitely worth to do. I found small point next to the cliff for the view and stayed there.
Before you start the part with high elevation, there is sign saying beyond that point “Dangerous climbing, only experienced climbers allowed, no children allowed, etc.”
It is very easy to follow this trail.

Amazing views!
About 3 hours in total.
Be aware than for non experienced hikkers this should be considered difficult or even very difficult (if wet). In few points you must climb using your hands and the descent can be a bit tricky if you do not have some mountain experience.
Thanks to the author for posting the track, we've enjoyed a lot!
Great hike but harder than expected. Would be good to wear long pants and gloves for climbing the rocks at top. Many people were unprepared and got scrapes and cuts as only wearing shorts.
