Itinerary description
The Las Pailas loop trail is located in the Rincón de la Vieja National Park. From here there are very nice views of the active Rincón de la Vieja volcano. The vegetation is nice but by far the most impressive aspect of this walk are the volcanic fumaroles with their steam and sulphur pour out of the yellow and red ochre-coloured ground. Clay and brown-colored pools bubble with boiling volcanic water. Smooth grey volcanic mud froths and explodes upward at the “Cauldrons” (“Las Pailas” in Spanish).
Our intention was to make the long hike to the crater of the volcano but the rangers did not allows us to do it because of thick fog. Instead, they recommended the Las Pailas trail.
This would be a fantastic place to take young children for a walk.
