Itinerary description
This is a nice, fairly easy walk covering three separate loops with a bit of backtracking in between. Lake Mountain is the closest alpine destination to Melbourne and certainly an easier, less winding drive than the next closest, Mount Baw Baw. We did have to contend with low visibility due to fog/mist on the way up and down.
The walk starts at the car park just below the Lake Mountain visitor's centre - there are toilets there and a cafe, and you can pick up paper maps with all the summer trails and a wildflower guide. The cafe closes about 3:00pm, I think.
After a bit of a climb up, the there's not too much ascending/descending on this hike, and the only thing a little challenging is where trails have become a bit overgrown. Long trousers can help here.
Also, lots of March flies and (non-biting but very crawly) ants - don't wear blue or other dark colours, take deet insect repellent (for the flies) and don't stand still too long, especially over a nest (for the ants). Otherwise, earlier in the season should be March fly free. We managed the hike with no bites from either.
We did this walk in mid-January, when there were wildflowers out everywhere - really beautiful, although 2009 fire damage is still very visible.
Enjoy!
