Lake Matheson is one of the recommended excursions in the surroundings of the Fox Glacier.
At the entrance is Café Matheson, which is the most recommended restaurant in the area (even other restaurants in the town of Fox told us it was the best place to eat in the area), although this does not mean that you eat well or that the wine list has a minimally adequate support. From our experience, if someday we return, we will buy something in the supermarket or we will continue to another place to eat. And, nevertheless, it has something unique: after all a rainy day or with clouds that completely covered the mountains of Aoraki Park, at the end of the afternoon, shortly before nightfall, the clouds dissolved and we could see the mountains Cook and Tasman , with its glaciers. An awesome memory.
Lake Matheson has a dark water, in which parts of the environment are reflected. This is one of the most outstanding features of this lake, which has been called Lake of Mirrors at times. In our photos you can see the reflections of trees and plants. The light wind and clouds prevented us from seeing the highlights: the reflection of the neighboring mountains.
Even so, the visit is pleasant and the surroundings are very beautiful. If you are in the area and there is time available for this is a visit that is worthwhile. On the other hand, we do not think it worthwhile to make a medium or long trip to visit it.
The most common reason to be in the area is to visit the Fox Glacier, but that day the access road was cut by landslides produced during the storm of the previous week, and you could only get to the parking lot and the River Walk Lookout, which , together with the low clouds, it limited much the vision of the glacier. The first photos of the series that we presented (apart from those of the beginning), are precisely from the area that we could see of the Fox Glacier and its access; Although it is not much I think they give a good idea that the total route planned for the day was not in any way less impressive than those of other days of this great trip.
Another of the realizable visits in the area is the beach of Gillespie, by a road not asphalted in its majority, that begins in the vicinity of Café Matheson. At the end of the series of photos I show some images of the access and environment of Gillespie Beach, a lonely beach of hard and torn beauty, very different from the beaches we saw in other places of the South Island. I suppose that here the Tasman Sea responds totally to its fame.
