Itinerary description

This easy walk takes you through the calm and scenic highlands of Flores, with their pastures, starting at two of the main crater lakes (Lagoa Rasa, the "shallow lake", and Lagoa Funda, the "deep lake"). In the second half of the walk you pass by some great viewpoints over the basin of Fajãzinha.
The walk is entirely on tarmac or dirt roads (though most with little traffic), hence from the technical point of view very easy to do. For those who do not like to walk on roads, unfortunately in this part of Flores there are hardly any pedestrian trails.
Our trail time includes a 40 min picnic break at Miradouro sobre Fajãzinha.

You can easily walk down from the road to the banks of Lagoa Rasa.

Dead end diversion

We diverted here to the left in order to take a field track, which runs parallel to the main road, that is on the other side of the Ribeira Grande creek. The field track, which e.g. is clearly visible on the satellite image of Wikiloc, would have allowed to avoid walking on the more busy major road that connects Santa Cruz das Flores with the west coast. However, after a few hundred meters it became rather overgrown by thorns, so we turned back.

Overgrown path

Here the field track was no longer in use by the farmers and had become rather overgrown by blackberry thorns. We turned back to take the main road. If someone finds it passable, e.g. because thorns have been removed, updates are welcome.

Possible diversion to Lagoa Negra and Lagoa Comprida

If you are taking the main road, here you can divert to the right and walk 200 m to reach some viewpoints over Lagoa Negra (the "black lake") and Lagoa Comprida (the "long lake"). Very much worth while. We just did not do it here because we had seen them already on another occasion, but I have put in the waypoints.
