Lake and Muratovo peak. Pirin Mountains. Bulgaria

The Pirin Mountains are a mountain range in southwestern Bulgaria, of which Vihren (2,914 m asl) is the highest peak. The ridge stretches for about 40 km in a northwest-southeast direction, and is approximately 25 km wide. Most of the mountain range is protected by being included in the Pirin National Park.

The mountainous chain receives its name from Perun, the most important god of the Slavic pantheon, divinity of thunder and lightning. To the north Pirin is separated from the highest mountain range in Bulgaria, the Rila Mountains, by the Predel Pass, while to the south it reaches the Slavianka Mountain. To the west is the Struma valley and to the east, the Mesta river.

Pirin stands out for its rich flora and fauna. Much of the region is covered in forests, including the best coniferous forests in Bulgaria, which support significant populations of endemic Balkan species such as Macedonian pine, Bosnian pine and Bulgarian fir. Among the animals that inhabit these mountains are the wolf and the brown bear.

The city of Bansko, a major tourist and winter sports center, is located on the north-eastern slopes of the Pirin Mountains. The city of Razlog lies in the Razlog Valley, between the Pirin Mountains to the south and the Rila Mountains to the north.

Pirin is the second highest mountain range in Bulgaria after Rila (2925 m asl) and the eighth highest in Europe after the Caucasus, the Alps, Sierra Nevada, the Pyrenees, Mount Etna, the aforementioned Rila and Mount Olympus.

It has an average height of 1033 m. Pirin is located in the southwestern part of the country, between the Struma and the Mesta rivers; it is bordered by Rila to the north at Predel Pass (1,142 m) and Slavianka to the south at Parilska Pass (1,170 m). The distance between these two points is 60 km from northwest to southeast and the maximum width of Pirin is 40 km.

Geologically and geographically Pirin is divided into three parts: north, central and south-

Pirin Norte is the largest of the subdivisions. It occupies 74% of the entire territory of the ridge, being about 42 km long and running from Predel in the north to the Todorova Polyana col (1883 m) in the south. The North Pirin is the most visited part of the range, the only one with an alpine appearance, featuring many lakes, rest houses and shelters, and also home to the highest peak, Vihren.

Central Pirin extends between the Todorova Polyana col and the Popovi Livadi col. It constitutes the smallest part (7%) and the lowest, with only 7 km long. The highest peak is Orelyak (2099 m).

Pirin Sur is the lowest and roundest part; the highest peak is Svesthnik with 1975 m. It occupies 17% of the Pirin and is about 11 km long and wide. Heavily forested with coniferous and deciduous trees, it is the least visited part of the mountains and lacks resting places.

The most important peaks are:
Vihren (Вихрен) 2914 m main summit
Kutelo (Кутело) main summit of 2,908 m
Banski Suhodol (Бански суходол, "Bansko Ravine") 2,884 m main summit
Goljam Poležan (Голям Полежан, "Grand Poležan") 2,851 m lateral summit of Poležan
Kamenica (Каменица) 2,822 m Kamenica Side Summit
Malăk Poležan (Малък Полежан, "Little Poležan") 2,822 m Poležan Side Ridge

The route starts at Chalet Vihren. We will go up the Banderitsa River on its eastern slope to reach Lake Muratovo. From here, a path that always goes up will take us to a col from which we will ascend to a nearby peak and to the Muratovo peak.

We will return by the same path to the Vihren cabin and descend to the Banderitsa Chalet.
