Itinerary description

This is a 20km walk around the 2 lakes north of Otranto. The route consists of roughly 4 different parts:
- East side of northern lake: This is the most busy part of the hike, here you pass the beach as well as a fish farm. Here you should have no problems to find a parking place during the off-season.
- East side of southern lake: This is the least nice bit of hike as you will follow a main road. So be careful for traffic. I've tried to avoid the road as much as possible, but I was unable to find any tracks closer to the lake.
- West side of southern lake: This will be the most quiet part of the hike, the road is fairly easy and other then mountain bikers, you are not likely to see much traffic
- West side of northern lake: This part is bit more adventures when following maze like tracks through the bushes. If it has been raining, you can always follow the newly created dirt road west of the suggest route. See waypoints for details.

If 20 km is too long, you can cut the track roughly in half and only hike around the northern lake. Use the (rather obvious) waypoint "Shortcut Bridge" as an indicator on where to cut the walk short.

See the details of the various waypoints for more information about the track

Waypoints

Detour 1

At this point, you can follow the indicated track or follow the new dirt road that runs parallel of the track. The indicated track resembles a maze: the track is quite narrow and makes many turns and cross with other tracks. If you want, you can follow any other track. You can't really get lost as you will be between the dirt road and the lake. I think this maze is particular fun for young kids (e.g 5-8 yrs)

Back on Track 1

After "Detour 1" the indicated track meets the dirt road.

Detour 2

From this point, you can deviate from the indicated track and you can follow the new unpaved road to the next waypoint. This might be good thing to do if it has been raining and the indicated track is too muddy.

Massaria Paccinna

One of the massarias you will pass by on this hike. But this one you can not visit (as far as I know)

Bench

This bench offers a great view over the lake and a great place for a break

Restaurant Podere

This is a hotel and restaurant you pass by during the hike. According to sign, it's open all year around.

Casino Lamione

A house you pass by during the hike.

Fish Farm

This is an active fish farm. From the bridge you can see a lot of fish. They seem to enjoy the water between fresh and salty.

Watertower

The water tower is visible for a large part of the hike and you can use it as a reference. I also believe this is the highest point of the hike

Back on Track 2

After "Detour 2", the indicated track meets the dirt road.

Masseria Muzza

A large masseria you pass by. From the road it's not clear if it's still in use or not.

Shortcut Bridge

Use this bridge if you want to cut the hike roughly in half. You can also use this WP as a reference for parking if it's too busy to park at the regular starting point.

End Point

At the end of the trip, you should be back at the parking

Start Point

Start your hike here. During the off season, there should be plenty of parking. During the peak season, you could try to park near "Shortcut Bridge" instead.

Possible Shortcut

Untested, but if you walk this hike counter-clockwise, you're likely to make a shortcut in the hike. From this point, you'll see a watchtower. After the watch tower, you can (hopefully) continue towards the building where you can see several trucks parked.
