Itinerary description
English (castellano debajo):
It's a very beautiful hike, although it's highly recommended to do it in August / September. This ones was done late June and we still found lots of snow around the path.
Starting point is the parking next to the hotel restaurante of Mauvoisin (parking for free) where you can also go by bus (https://www.sbb.ch/en/ y no hay demasiados). From that point onwards you start going up till the dam (there is another path available for winter, but in summer you can use the road). There are various tunnels to cross the dam and after the path is flat as in a nice walk.
All the path is clearly marked, but due to the snow, there were several sections where either the signs or the path were covered so it was more difficlt to follow. This means that in summer you cannot get lost. There are just two forks that can be a bit tricky, but actually both of them reach to the same point. it's just that it will take shorte are steeper in one than in the others.
The first turn will make you go via a mountain train (coloured red and white) where you will find a couple of stairs and a totally unnecessary chain. It will be a short but intense ascend that will take you to Ecuries du Giétro.
From there to col de Tsofeiret there is a continuos ascension but more relaxed (500m level differente in about 2 hours). In our case, there were lots of snow which made it more dificult, but quite ok in general terms.
During the whole time there were many green lands and the views to the other side are simply amazing where you can see the water from the thaw going downhill and ending in the dam. To reach to the peak you need to pass close to a couple of lakes (frozen at this time) that you could use in summer to refresh youself. At this point of the year, just impossible.
Right after the peak we start the descend. The first few minutes it's quite steep, with falling and slipery rocks and wet, quite tough not to fall. Once this section is over, you will still find quite lot of snow and a dangerous section due to the snow. Once you start going down the snow is melted more and more and the trail is more confortable.
You will have views to the glacier to the left, and even another one in front. Until you reach the Chanrion shelter you will see waterfalls and even groundhogs! The descend continues up until Lancet bridge in a nice sandy path. From that point onwards it change drastically and you will start to walk in gravel.
The path will be wider and almost flat. Due to the thaw we had to cross a couple of "rivers" where we ended up with both feet wet up until the ankles.
This path will guide you directly to a gallery (10 - 15 mins) until you are back to the dam. From there you will use the same path to reach the parking.
*Recommended if you go with children to get a torch (or the mobile phone) to cross the tunnels.
*In the tunnels the temperature drops a lot and it's quite chilly even if outisde is super warm.
*The whole route is about 24 km (22.5 as per the official map http://www.verbier.ch/fr/fppoi-tour-du-lac-de-mauvoisin-19222.html) but because there is no coverage in the gallery the program got a bit crazy when trying to calculate where you are).
