La font d'Arethusa, illa d'Ítaca, Grècia. Η βρύση της Αρεθούσας, Ιθάκη, Ελλάδα. Fountain of Arethusa, Ithaca island, Greece.

Curta i bonica caminada en alçada per l’abrupta i verge costa oriental de la part sud de la mítica i bella illa d’Ítaca. El camí ens mena a la font que om fa coincidir amb la font d’Arethusa, on Ulisses va trobar-se amb Eumeu (Eumaeus, Εὔμαιος), el seu fidel porquerol, el primer mortal amb qui es va trobar a Ítaca, després que els fenicis l’hi deixessin, 20 anys després d’haver-ne sortit per anar a la guerra de Troia, la Ilíada, 10 anys, i per tornar-ne durant 10 anys més d’odissea prodigiosa: l’Odissea.
El camí comença al costat d’una carretereta/pista, fins aquí asfaltada, que va de Vathí a la i la punta sud-est de l’illa, a uns 3 km de Vathí (Βαθύ, Vathý).
La caminada discorre per la costa, primer a 257 m d’altitud sobre el mar, per anar baixant fins a la Font d’Arethusa que n’està a 87 m. El camí és empedrat a l’inici, després es va tornat un corriol de muntanya. La font és una surgència d’aigua dins una la roca calcària en un penya-segat. Per treure l’aigua ens hi vam trobar una galleda de joguina lligada amb filferro a un bastó prim curt i tort, però l’invent va funcionar! L’aigua és intensament biològica: conté algues, plàncton, capgrossos..., és fresca, bona per remullar-se la cara i, assedegats com estàvem després d’una caminada sufocant en ple estiu, en vam beure i no ens ha passat res.
Al costat mateix de la mítica font hi ha una tancat fet amb filat per a cabres, però les cabres campen per on volen. Tot i la galledeta i el bastó, el filat de les cabres i les cabres soltes, el lloc és mític, amb el blanc penya-segat damunt nostre i a sota la verda vessant coberta de pins que davalla fins al blavíssim mar Egeu, en una costa preservada i verge.

A short and beautiful hike on altitude by the rough and unspoiled east coast of the southern part of Ithaki Island. The path take us to the source that is considered as the Fountain of Arethusa, where Odysseus met Eumaeus (Εὔμαιος), his faithful swineherd and the first mortal he came across in Ithaki, after the Phoenicians let him on it, 20 years after he had left Ithaki to go to the War of Troia, which lasted 10 years, the Iliad, to then return in a prodigious odyssey, which lasted 10 years more, the Odyssey.
The path starts beside the small road, paved up to here, which goes from Vathy to Aghios Iohannis, the last on the southernmost and easternmost extreme of the island. The path starting point is at approximately 3 km from Vathy.
The pathway runs along the coast, at the beginning at 257 m over the sea, for later descending until the Arethusa spring, 87 m over the sea. The path is stone paved at the beginning, a little bit later becomes a narrow mountain path. The fountain is a wellspring inside a cavity in the calcareous rocks of the cliffs. To get the water from the hole in the rock we found a toy bucket tied with wire to a thin and tortuous stick. Rudimentary, but it worked! The water is intensely biological: it contains algae, plankton, tadpoles…, it is fresh, good for face washing and, thirsty as we were after a stifling summer walk, we drank it and nothing wrong occurred to us.
Just beside the mythic fountain there is a fence for goats but the goats go wherever they want. Despite the toy cube, the stick, the wire fence for goats, the goats going by everywhere..., the place remains mythic, with the white cliffs over us and the green pine covered slopes descending to the intensely blue Aegean Sea, in a virgin and preserved coast.
