Itinerary description

The hike will take just 11 miles round trip to Le Cumbre Peak and back via the Rattlesnake Canyon trailhead on Las Canoas Road. You ascend and return by the same route.

The route begins at the trailhead, which is located by the stone bridge on Las Canoas Road (directions below). Ascend steadily north through the canyon for about 2.5 miles, until we reach the Tunnel Trail connector. We then head west and somewhat more steeply for a short mile on the connector trail until we reach the Tunnel Trail. At the junction, Le Cumbre Peak will be in plain sight directly to our northwest.

Once you reach the Tunnel Trail, proceed north for another 2.5 miles on the Tunnel Trail, until you reach the (paved) East Camino Cielo fireroad. At the fireroad, turn west for a mile or so to reach Le Cumbre Peak and the great views and picnic area there (there is no running water...please carry what you will need). There is a pit toilet at the top.

The route begins in a heavily forested canyon but gradually gives way to open hillsides and exposed ridgelines. Because of this, weather can range from calm and humid to misty with ocean winds to quite warm and dry conditions.
