Itinerary description

There are many ways to explore the hills above the north side of the City of Guanajuato. Perhaps the simplest is to start at the top of the Colonia Cerro de Leones and follow an ancient Camino Cerro de La Bolita, possibly hundreds of years old. This route describes a route below the main track that traverses the steep hillside, past a small “artesanal” private mine, then switchbacks up to an open ridge, from where you can continue north to a treed summit or swing west to a minor summit marked with a white cross. We visited the cross (directly above Presa da La Olla), then followed the main route back to Cerro de Leones.

I didn’t start recording until a minute or so along the trail. To start this route, follow the gravel road to the highest point of Cerro de Leones. To access the main track, you pass through a large chainlink fence. To follow the route described in this trail, look for a reasonably-well-travelled trail following the terrain on the left.

Please note that there was a minor malfunction with the App. The starting point is the same as the end point, top of Colonia Cerro de Leones.

Note that the actual time is more, perhaps double, than noted in the stats. Not sure if this is a problem with my phone or the app.

As note, while the main track heads up and is quite wide, this trail traverses the hillside and is much narrrower.

It is possible that you may have to head up above this little mine and stone casita. if so, you will still end up at the same destination.

I love this old road...who knows how old it might be. We headed down it a way before taking a switchback track up toward the Cross.
