Itinerary description
La Alberca and Peña de Francia Peak
The name of the Peña de Francia (and also of the venerated image) is probably a reference to repopulators from France in the 11th and 12th centuries. In 1434 an image of the Virgin was discovered for whose custody a chapel was built. The Virgin of Peña de França achieved much fame and veneration. A few years later, the sanctuaries passed into the hands of Dominican monks, who built the church, the convent and the inn, in the 15th century, which were intended to provide refuge for pilgrims. The image of the Virgin, carved in 1890, is located on the highest rock of the mountain, presiding over the altar. It is currently a guesthouse. Only the chapels, the cloister and an area suitable for photographic exhibitions can be visited from the monastery and sanctuary.
