Itinerary description
The hike starts on the road above the summerhouses Þverá. This trail follows the gravel road leading to Skarðsdalsá. Then follow the Skarðsdalsá-river upwards until seeing the path and green marking bars. After that the path is well visible although many of the markings are broken. One of the brooks was just to wide and waterrich for me to to hop and had to be waded. The slope up to the mountain pass is covered with snow and relatively steep but it was not difficult to ascend in the snow. From the mountain pass there is a great good view over the mountains on the east side of Lágheiði and to Fljót. Again the slope on the west side of the pass was covered with snow and no problem passing it. Keep to the north of the river to avoid having to wade the river from Holtsdalur entering Brúnastaðaá-river. There are some markings on the way down and most of the time one can see the sheep path. The hike is not technically difficult but it is long considering the different landscape (tussocks, moore, snow, slides, brooks).

Marking bar
There are also a few marking bars on the west side of the mountain pass, but don´t rely on them.
