Built by the first king of unified Georgia Bagrat III in the 11-th century, the cathedral stood intact till the end of the 17th century, when it was destroyed by Ottoman invaders. In the 18th century, the temple suffered irreparable damage when General Totleben, an "ally" of King Solomon I of Imereti, bombed the Bagrati temple area in a battle with the Ottoman invaders. The lavish decor of facades, and especially the porticoes, vividly demonstrates the wonderful achievements of Georgian architecture in the stylized depiction of flora and fauna. Reconstruction works on Bagrati Cathedral took more than fifty years. They started in the 1950s and were completed in 2012.
