Itinerary description

One of the most magnificent hikes at the coastal Montenegro. Nature and history packed in 30km. Starting at the sea level and reaching the mausoleum at 1657m and then back. It starts in the old town, goes up the city walls and turns left before the San Giovanni fort at the very top. Once out through a narrow opening you get to an abandoned village Spiljari though there is still one family living there and I'd recommend stopping by on your way back for refreshments and homemade products. The old Montenegrin way keeps winding up until finally reaching Krstac after about 2,5h, a bit of asphalt road and the trail gets into the forest going to Medjuvrsje where the roads lead left to mausoleum, right to Ivanova Korita and the trail continues straight but ever since the new road has been built part of the trail vanished so you've got to walk around it to get back on the marked trail that goes via Veliki and Mali Bostur (the first part of it is rather disastrous, overgrown with loads of fallen trees after the wildfires so pay full attention) all the way to the car park below the mausoleum. The final part is another 461 steps. I always take the old trail right from the tunnel and return down the steps through the tunnel. There's an entry fee for the mausoleum.
Behind the chapel is a plateau from where the views reach as far as Herzegovina, Croatia, Albania and all of Montenegro. Well worth the hike.
The trail back goes down the northern side of Lovcen (it's always cooler there), down the asphalt road and then left into the forest all the way to Njegusi and farther to Krstac (be sure not to miss the turn from the main road in Njegusi left up, there's a marking on the electricity pole on the other side of the road indicating where the trail continues). There's a bit of walking from Krstac down the asphalt road to where the trail turns right into the forest (before the restaurant Nevjesta Jadrana) and close to Praciste you are back on the old Montenegrin way zigzagging down to Kotor behind the city walls and ending up at its northern gate.
It's a long and strenuous hike. Can take anything between 7 and 11h walking. There are 2 water springs, one right before Medjuvrsje and the other above Mali Bostur. There are restaurants in Krstac, below mausoleum and the family in Spiljari serves drinks and homemade cheese, prosciutto, olives etc.

What an amazing experience! This trail alone is worth the trip to Montenegro, it truly is a tour through everything you could ask for: Castles, abandoned stone villages, amazing views of the Kotor bay, forest tracks, technical and exposed climbs, grassy plains, rock gardens filled with flowers and a 19th century Mausoleum before getting to an amazing view where you can actually see where you started!!

The person who designed this trail knows quite a bit about trail running since the ascent and descent are perfectly well tracked, with tough climbs on the way up and sustained paths where you can run on the way down.

What a fantastic trail! If you enjoy the outdoors, then you have to complete this loop at least once in your life!
