Itinerary description
A half-day hike starting at the end of tram line 5, that takes you two thirds up on the Vitosha mountain. From there you can hike back, turning it into a long-ish day hike, or you can spend the night in the Zvezditza hut and continue your ascent to the Black Peak the next day.
The trails are easy to find and well marked. At first you're following the signs to the Boyana waterfall, then to Vladaya, then to Zlatni Mostove, and finally to the Edelweiss hut and the Zvezditsa hut. You'll be walking mostly on soil, but some roads are paved. There are many shelters and fountains along the way, which limits the amount of water you need to take.
The scenery is varied, and most of the hike is through the forest, offering plenty of shade. The waypoints marked as 'mini waterfall' are small rapids or cascades. They are not spectacular, but offer nice spots to rest while enjoying the stream.
The hike took us about 5:30 hours, but that was with a generous allowance for breaks. It can easily be done in an hour less. The end point of the trail is accessible by car, so if you can somehow arrange for transportation, you could do the hike one-way.

From here you can descend into the village of Vladaya, from where you can catch the train back to Sofia if you don't feel like going up the mountain.

If you continue for 600m straight from here instead of crossing the river on the right, you'll get to the Zlatni Mostove (Golden Bridges). It has hotels and restaurants, and a bus stop from where you can catch bus 63 back to Sofia (at least on weekends).
