Itinerary description
I did this trail with my friend Bryan, his wife Tara, and three of their friends. We started this trail at the Great River Bluffs State Park Office just outside Donehower, Minnesota at 43º56´23´´ N and 91º24´30´´W. There’s a day pass fee of $7.00 U.S.D. that allows passage along the network of trails that constitute this park. The trailhead is just a short drive along the gravel road. There are lots of camping grounds throughout the park so pay attention to signage or you may miss the trailhead.
The trailhead is located at 43º56´40´´ N and 91º24´11´´W and is quite clearly marked. There are warning signs posted about the presence of the timber rattlesnake along the trail. South-eastern Minnesota is home to the timber rattlesnake but fatal bites are rare. The poison control centres are in Rochester, La Crosse, and Decorah. All of these are within 15 miles radii.
The trails are easy with shallow gradients. The views of the valleys along the Mississippi River on both the Minnesota and Wisconsin sides are exceptional. If you are interested in the fall colurs then mid to late October seems to be the best time to get out there. The King’s Bluff Overlook is located at 43º57´28´´ N and 91º24´34´´W and there’s a bench there. This trail is also great in the winter months for snow shoeing and cross country skiing.
Happy Trails.
