Itinerary description

I did this walk with two others as part of our 4 days hiking in County Cavan, Ireland. The Killykeen National Park and the Derinish Island has numerous pathways all through beautiful forest or with views of the lakes. We used the Coilte (Irish Forestry Service) map as our guide. We went by car from Killashandra to the Parking Area at the footbridge between Gartanoul and Derinish Islands. There we took the path along the shore of Lough Oughter along by the boat house to the Equestrian Centre. Our return was through beautiful forest land, where we saw and heard the many birds that inhabit the area, observed and photographed insects, butterflies and wild flowers. When we arrived back to the footbridge we decided to do the walk around the Island of Derinish More, again a beautiful forest walk. We returned to the car and had our sandwich. We decided we needed to walk a bit more so we walked along the shore on the other side fo Lough Oughter by Woodenhouse Bay to a viewing point were we saw some Swans. From there we crossed to the other side of Gartanoul and made our way back by Sandy Beach to the Parking Area. In total we did over 13 km between the two walks. A beautiful walk on flat ground, most relaxing. It is worth a visit to hike the many walks in the area, with peace and tranquillity in the forest.
