Ascent to Kilimanjaro, Gilman`s Point (5685m), Stella Point (5756m) and Uhuru Peak (top) (5895m). We use the Marangu Route, which is the most common. The route is spectacular because of the layout, the landscapes, the views and the lodgings in cabins, which are basic but cozy
It is a very comfortable ascent on the days of approach and acclimatization until the last camp, Kibo Hut, you walk "pole pole" and on wide paths. But the day of ascent to the top becomes very, very hard, mainly due to the effect of the altitude, the accumulated unevenness and the cold, since at the top you can reach a thermal sensation of -30º, and a real temperature of -15º, all this taking into account that the body is already very fair.
You cannot do this ascent by yourself, you have to go with the guides and porters hired in the official agencies of Tanzania.
I break down the itinerary below.
Day 1: transfer from Arusha to Marangu Gate by minibus, with guides and porters. It takes between 4 and 5 hours, depending on the traffic. Regarding the number of guides and porters, there is a stipulated number that must be accepted: 1 guide for every two mountaineers and 4 porters per person.
After completing the permitting process (which also requires your time), the march begins on foot. We start from about 1,900m to reach 2,700m in about 4h, to Mandara Hut. The entire itinerary is wooded area.
Day 2: Mandara Hut (2700m) to Horombo Hut (3700m), about 5h. Soon you leave the forest and go through dry but vegetated terrain.
Day 3: Horombo Hut to Zebra Rock and nearby ridge at about 4100m altitude. This is an acclimatization day. Some skip this day, but every time this extra day is used to increase the guarantees of success
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4700m). Here you are already going through a desert area, with wind, cold and a lot of dust.
The madness of unevenness of the ascent begins. It leaves on the morning of the 4th around 8, and in about 4-5h, very slowly, you will arrive at Kibo Hut. There they rest for a few hours, whoever can "have dinner" around 5:00 p.m. rests a few more hours, and at 11:00 p.m. to get ready because soon they will leave for the top.
Day 5: we leave around 00:30, closed night. Only the feet of the one in front of you can be seen. You go up a quarry with a steep drop, and only the lights of the fronts of those preceding you can be seen upwards. And so about 5-6h. On the way you can find people vomiting, pouting or turning around. A little before dawn we reached Gilman's Point, which is a point where "they already give you the certificate of ascension" even if you don't go on. But what remains is worth it, it is about 200m of unevenness, through easy terrain and that ascends to Stella Point and, finally, to the top of Uhuru Peak. We arrived around 7-7: 30 in the morning. There are remains of frozen snowfields and it is cold. In fact, all the way up, most of us have frozen fingers and toes.
After the photos, the hugs and others, the descent begins, which is easy and very fast, both because of the terrain and because of the euphoria. Around 10 am we are back at Kibo Hut, a little soup, a relaxed hour, and we continue walking to Horombo Hut, where we arrive around 2 pm. This section is already pure enjoyment, despite the fatigue, and passing the part and the tips that you come across that go up.
In summary, days 4 and 5 are hard, because they are continuous, we start from 3700 to 5900 and decrease, all in about 30-31 hours.
The effect of altitude is unpredictable and affects individually regardless of fitness. Most I think it goes up, but there are many who turn around. We were 4, two did not follow from the last camp. My wife and I followed, and we both ascended. I am fitter than her, and in other altitude situations I have felt better, but this time I have to admit that I arrived very just, and she finished infinitely better than me.
I also have the tracks broken down by days, in case anyone is interested.
Although it does not have any technical difficulty, I have classified it as Very difficult due to the altitude, which is a very important handicap.
