Third day of our ascension to the roof of Africa.
Both today's and tomorrow's stages are two very important stages. Today we start at 3840 m. and reach 4640 m. to go down again and make a night at 3940 m.
And it is that from 4000 m. Of the height, the important decrease in atmospheric pressure has important effects on the human body. A too fast climb exposes the body to too sudden changes in pressure and this can have health consequences: from headache, vomiting and nausea to pulmonary and cerebral edema.
The best way to avoid bad height is to acclimatize to the height, gaining meters gradually. This is the goal of stages 3 and 4.
To achieve this, the route follows leads to Barranco camp (3940 m) but not directly, but deviating from the path to reach the so-called 'lava tower': an enormous black rock protuberance at 4640 m . of height
So, we start from Shira camp at 3840 m. Towards 9 in the morning and we are gaining height in a very gradual but continuous way. Little by little the bushes that had dominated the landscape of the previous day disappear leaving the bare volcanic stone. The sun also leaves us for the benefit of clouds, rain and snow ... For the first time since the beginning of the expedition, we notice cold weather.
After about 3 hours of walking we find the link to the Lemosho route (4450 m.), Which allows the Kilimanjaro to ascend from NO.
30 minutes later, we find the deflection that allows us to reach Barranco camp directly without having to pass through lava tower (4500 m.). This is obviously the route taken by the carriers responsible for the logistics aspects of the expedition ...
4 hours and a quarter after leaving Shira finally arrived at lava tower (4640 m.) Where we stop for lunch.
From here, the path goes practically continuous all the time until it reaches Barranco (3940m) and, as we go down, the vegetation returns.
About 7 hours after leaving Shira finally arrived at the Barranco camp where we will spend the night.

El mal tiempo nos impidió ascender a Lava Tower... que pena
