March held on Wednesday, August 1, 2012
NOTICE: It is understood that anyone who wants to do this same route assumes the responsibility that an activity entails that is not exempt from possible risks or incidents, in an environment in which common sense and circumstances can make the difference between having a good day or the opposite.
Like the rest of the marches carried out in the Hawaiian Islands, we start it very early to take advantage of the daylight hours. Keep in mind that in the summer of the fiftieth state of the USA, it dawns a little after six in the morning and gets dark just after seven in the afternoon. In addition, it is much better to walk with the cool of the morning, because when it clears and the sun passes through the continuous clouds that pass through the islands, the effect that the king star produces on the skin is so overwhelming that all sun protection is little. We started the march at the house of the "Volcano" which is how it appears on all the information signs that refer to Kilauea. To access the Volcanoes National Park, the first day we paid ten dollars per car, which entitles us to access throughout the week, both day and night, and thus be able to photograph and enjoy the glow of the Kilauea caldera, still active. This morning we wanted to take a tour of part of one of the craters that make up Kilauea, specifically the one called Iki trail Kialuea, which passed through a lava tube called Thurstone and through an area called "Devastation", and that only when you get to it, you understand the reason for that name. Needless to say, that in the route through the little more than eight hundred meters of lava tube, the GPS signal was lost, to recover it again as soon as we left.
The route begins in the "House Volcano" parking lot, going back a little on the entrance road, to take a paved path at the beginning, which in a southeasterly direction will take us after about four kilometers to the Thurstone lava tube, the which can be traveled from one end to the other, without the need for fronts, since it is illuminated internally. As soon as we go through it, the other exit will take us back to a road with access to a car park, which is accessed by people who do not want to do the tour on foot. On the right there is a small path that in continuous descent and making several z's allows us to descend to one of the craters of Kilauea, still hot in some areas and with fumaroles, despite the fact that a few years have passed since it entered in 1959 in eruption. Needless to say, the landscape seems to be from another planet. Here the direction of travel becomes slightly northwest. There are some milestones along the way, but the changing weather conditions make it advisable to proceed with caution so as not to leave the traced path. Almost at the end of the crater and after a kilometer and a half, to our left we can see a chaotic area called "Devastation trail" through which in theory a path should run, but in reality it is cut off and impassable due to the conditions of the terrain. From here we will change direction to the northeast again, after a steep but short slope of just under half a kilometer, to connect with the path that we came from and that started the circular. From here to the interpretation center and to the cars, just over a kilometer and a half.
