Itinerary description

All my gratefulls to this page for all the good information and very nice treks https://www.caucasus-trekking.com

All information here comes from this page mixed with our experience:
https://www.caucasus-trekking.com/treks/khalde-to-ushguli-by-lagem-pass

Route that is not for everyone and that can be difficult to follow depending on the time of year. It is not recommended to do it in the rain or if the ground is wet

We have done this route in the middle of August 2023, trying to update the status of the route. We start in Khalde taking the road in the direction of Adishi for 1h with wonderful views. Passing several shepherds' huts, you come to the sign indicating the ascent to the Chkhunderi pass. Instead of turning left, continue straight through some tall grass. In this section it can be more difficult to follow the trail depending on the people who have traveled it. At the time of our route it was followed without problem. Take a detour to the right at the first stream and continue along the path as far as a bridge that is currently in good condition. We continue for a few metres, turning right looking for a stream that we will keep to our right as we go up. When the time comes, we cross it once and then again, going up the middle hill between the two streams. Here we have the steepest part of the route so little by little and taking several breaths, we face energy with great views between meadows and rhododendrons. Once we reached the top, we rested for a while. So far it has taken us 3h. We leave our backpacks and go up to the pass that we have right in front of us, taking about 40 minutes. We face the descent with quite steep moments, especially at the beginning, where it can be dangerous if done in the rain or if the ground is slippery. We continue going down until we reach the road that goes to the glacier and ends in the town of Ushguli. The way down took another 3h because of the slope, so it is important to have in mind for calculating the whole time employed.

I highly recommend reading the information on the blog where all the information about the trek comes in great detail.

We have done this trek three days ago and I would say that it is easy to follow. At the first fork in the path, the grass can be a bit high but the path is clearly visible right away. At some other time rhododendrons are crossed but the path is quite marked at the moment. it is likely that when it is less traveled it will be more difficult to follow but right now I don't think there will be a problem. It is important to avoid doing the trail in bad weather as there are times on the way up and down with a lot of slope that can be dangerous if the ground is slippery

We did this trek today, August 23rd 2023. We followed this KML via MapsMe. Perfect! It rained on the 22nd for about 1-2 hours and we were a bit nervous about the wet grass etc. however it was fine. I highly recommend poles. Only confident and fit hikers for this trail as well. Thank you josegonrod97 and Caucasus-trekking website!
