Itinerary description
This track starts at The Divide and follows the Key Summit track to get to Key Summit (918 m), the lookout point and also continues a bit further on this ridge of the Livingstone Mountains to get to the summit of the next mountain at 1086 meters.
The Divide is a parking area in the road to Milford Sound. This is the place where hikers start or end the Routeburn track which is one the Great Walks in New Zealand.
The first section of the track is wide and well maintained and is common with the Routeburn track. This goes on until we find a signpost that splits the two tracks: Left to the Routeburn track and right to keep going up to Key Summit.
After about 3 Km from the start we reach Key Summit where we find a little pond and some kind of metal circle indicating the mountains and ranges all around.
We continue on the track for about 600 more meters and we get to the lookout point where we enjoy fantastic views of lake Marian far in the distance.
The touristy track ends here but that doesn't mean that you cannot continue further. It is not so obvious at the beginning, you will also cross a few hundred meters of forest where frequent fallen trees could make it harder to find the way and progress but soon you will get out on the clear again and find yourself on an easy-to-follow track following the ridge.
We continued on this track for about another two kilometres until we reach the next summit on the ridge at 1086 meters. Even though we decided to turn around here the track seems to continue further on the ridge.
From here we go back the same way that we came until we get back to the car at The Divide.
