Sixth stage of the Kerry Way – Ireland crossing
To compensate for the harshness of the previous day, today we decided to take a break and cut the route in half. We had another weighty argument: the visit of the Skellig Islands , a UNESCO Heritage Site.
All in all, it turned out to be a splendid day - a short, easy ride, with beautiful white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters. The sun accompanied us all day to round it off.
So, instead of walking out of Waterville , we took a taxi that took us to Derrynane Harbour . There was the meeting point with the boat that would take us to the Skellig Islands (book in advance!).
After the visit, the walking tour starts around midday along Derrynane beach. At every turn of the road, there's a photo more beautiful than the last.
We detoured to visit Abbey Island and the remains of the Maritime Cemetery.
After retracing the coast, we made another tourist stop to visit the house of Daniel O'Connell, the Liberator ( Derrynane House ) and father of the Irish homeland
Once we reach Caherdaniel (a village with four houses and a pub) we will turn towards the sea, to do the last section along a road with little space for pedestrians.
It paid off, because today's accommodation was the best yet, by popular acclaim Olde Forge B&B has the most beautiful views, modern, clean and spacious. With super attentive hosts and a breakfast for ten. We couldn't ask for more today!
