First stage of the Kerry Way – Ireland – Ireland crossing
The first day of our crossing will be a very entertaining route without technical difficulty. Entertained by the diversity of landscape stimuli: picturesque village, forests, waterfalls, wastelands, ...
The starting point of the crossing is the tourist town of Killarney. It's worth popping in the day before and having a Guinness in one of the many pubs. Horse-drawn carts loaded with tourists will accompany us for the first few kilometers, following the road.
Soon we will enter the leafy Killarney National Park. It is an easy path along the shores of Lough Leanne, with large oaks, rhododendrons and grassy meadows. We didn't find deer this day, but we did on the way back.
I recommend deviating a few meters from the route to visit Muckross Abbey (4.5 Km). In the middle of the cloister stands an imposing Yew
We will cross the Muckross house and its beautiful gardens. Unfortunately we won't go inside to visit the mansion because that would take up a lot of our time. It is pending for another visit.
Immediately we will find Torc Waterfall, in the middle of a beech forest. It was quite full of water from the rains of the last few days. More spectacular than in the photos!
After a short climb, we will leave the forest and enter another very different environment: wastelands of grass and peat. It is the Old Kenmare Road. The rain that had been timid until now gave way to showers and gusty winds. They soon had to test the waterproofness of our equipment
However, the main challenge of the day came a little later, in the form of flooding in the lower Upper Lake. When we were just a few kilometers away from our destination, we found that the road was impassable. They had to turn around, pull us over to the nearest road for help. The Wikiloc route will therefore lack the last 3 km.
A friendly couple from Kenmare drove us to our destination: Black Valley. The hostel is basic but clean, spacious and comfortable. In addition, the views of the valley are unbeatable. It doesn't have food service but it has a kitchen and you can also book dinner at Black Valley Lodge, the house right next door, where they enjoyed a Thai dinner.
Recommendation for the walker: keep up-to-date communication about the state of the paths before starting. Don't make the same mistake again! 😊
