Today we went to Ceann Trá (or Ventry, in English). We are in the port of Ventry (Cuan Fiontra). We came in about 15 minutes from An Daingean (Dingle). Dingle Bay and Cean Trá Bay are separated by the small Ballymore Peninsula.
With a small boat waiting for us, we will have a journey of one hour to Blasket Island. Remember that the bay (and the port) is a suitable anchorage for sailing and fishing boats. History tells us that on October 4, 1939, a German submarine U-35 entered Ventry Bay and dropped off twenty-eight Greek sailors from the MV Diamantis which had been torpedoed by a submarine.
The ship sails through the bay, turns west and heads straight for Blasket Island. To the right, above the cliffs, is the misty silhouette of Mount Eagle (Sliabh an Iolair), 461 meters high. All these mountains on the peninsula are rounded, which indicates that this is a very old geological territory, since erosion has been smoothing them...and reducing their original height.
