Route from the center of Kerikeri to the Rainbow Falls, going through the Stone Store, the Kemp House, the bridge to cross the Kerikeri River, the Historic Power House, the Wharepoke Falls and the Fairy Pools, and Kerikeri Heritage Bypass at the back, good and repeating part of the way of the going, which coincides with the Kerikeri River Track.
The route begins at the center of the village of Kerikeri and continues until you reach the parking lot of the Stone Store, the first interesting point on the route. Obviously, the route can begin at this point, but in this case it has been decided to also explore the town. The Stone Store and the Kemp House, located on the Bay of Islands, are the oldest buildings in New Zealand that are still standing, and are part of the Kerikeri Mission Station, one of the first places where the Māori invited visitors so that live with them. In this area, the Kerikeri River reaches its end and joins the Pickmere Channel, and the surrounding area, together with birds, rocks and vegetation, is simply charming. The views from the bridge that crosses the Kerikeri river are spectacular, and the picnic area just after crossing it is a postcard, with large trees to rest in the shade. At this point the Kerikeri River Track begins, and an information poster indicates the areas of interest and the distances to reach it. Following the Kerikeri River, the first one to find is the Historic Power House, Kerikeri's first energy generator; It is a building open to the public and with informative posters in the interior. Continuing the route, and shortly after the Historic Power House, there appear Wharepoke Falls, small waterfalls on the Kerikeri River, which seem to be a warning of what will be at the end of the route. Further on, cross the Kerikeri Heritage Bypass, one of the main roads that cross the Kerikeri River, and continue to the Fairy Pools, an area where you can take a shower or even bathe in the gorges of the river kerikeri After the Fairy Pools, and less than two kilometers away, you will finally reach the Rainbow Falls, spectacular waterfalls that fill a small reservoir where you can also take a dip. You can go around the waterfalls to see them from different points of view, and the area invites you to admire them for a long time.
The return breaks the same path until you reach the crossroads with the Kerikeri Heritage Bypass (just after the Fairy Pools), where Kerikeri River Track is left to cross the bridge along the road sidewalk and reach the town, just in the place where he left.
It is a very simple route, almost unequivocally, well marked by the DOC's (Department of Conservation) newsletters, which runs along leafy roads alongside the Kerikeri River. The path is very well adapted, and the shade of the trees and the freshness of the river help to forget the sun. During the route you will find different places of interest that are very beautiful, and the Rainbow Falls are simply the cornerstone; Just after the last turn, there is a photograph of the cascades, which deserves a long time of attention and admiration. Apart from that, the same area where the Stone Store and Kemp House are located is a perfect paradise to rest or spend the whole day: incredible scenery, shaded areas thanks to the large trees, and the Kerikeri River and A small reservoir to bathe.
