The hardest of the 4 days, even more so if you extend it with a morning visit to the Luxmore cave, which is not included in this route.
***But the views are definitely rewarding***
There are two tough climbs that add up to more than 1,000 meters of elevation difference between the two.
The first is to Mt. Luxmore itself, from where you can see Te Anau, Lake Te Anau itself, Lake Manapouri, and the snow-capped mountains of the fjords.
Then you descend a little to reach the 1st shelter (Forest Burn Shelter) and face the 2nd ascent.
This 2nd ascent faces the star route of the entire Kepler Track, which is the one that runs along the crest of the mountain, with spectacular fjords and valleys on both sides. Breathtaking!!!
Once you have completed the entire ridge you reach the 2nd shelter (Hanging Valley Shelter), and after it you go down (and up) to a viewpoint of the entire valley, and immediately begins the endless descent of more than 1,000 meters and about 2 hours to the Iris Burn Hut.
And even so you have to save energy to do the extra bonus of 40' round trip to the Iris Burn Waterfall, and bathe in its icy waters if you dare!!! (I had enough just putting my feet up).
