Itinerary description
This fairly steep trail takes one to Otter Creek then up the other side of the canyon which is steeper. It is a pretty trail with fragrant bay trees along the way. It is designated for hikers, horses, and mountain bicycles only. (It may be too steep for some horses). No motorized vehicles are allowed on this trail. The trail starts at "A" where the Forest Service trail post is. When you reach "B" there is a junction with a side trail that climbs out of the canyon. This side trail was probably the original starting point for the Kelliher Trail. I suggest taking this route out on the way back to your vehicle. You will also see the remnants of the old Jones mining ditch at point "B". When "C" is reached you will be at the bottom of the canyon where an old mine entrance can be found. The trail continues uphill after you cross Otter Creek at "C". Rock terraces from old mining days can still be found here. The Kelliher family grew veggies in these terraces to sell to miners working along the creek. It is cool and very pretty down there. A long steep climb is ahead of you until "D" is reached. "D" marks the trail head on the north side of the canyon. Following the road to "E" takes you to a good place to park your truck along road 13N56C where another signpost points the direction to the trail head at "D".
