Itinerary description

We have a house in Kastrisianika and have been visiting the very impressive ruins of Palaiochora (in impressive/ beautiful / harsh nature surroundings) many times by car. This time instead I walked a route starting from our house. There is a dirt road much of the way, but it ends in a olive plantation. From this you have to pass about 300 m up a small hill to reach another dirt road - and this isn’t easy (as seen at the record). There is a fence around the olive plantage and you have to move it a little in the upper east corner to get through. After that you walk up the hill soon passing a small church-ruin. But you have to walk through some very thorny plants / scrubs for small distances before you reach the other dirt road at the top of the hill. From there its easy walking the rest of the route to Palaiochora, which you reach after about 3 km more. Before the castle ruins I took a small side-trail to another little church ruin - to see the castle ruins and the impressive mountain gorge from there. 2 years ago I walked in the bottom of this gorge in a dried out riverbed, and nearly came to the part down the castle, but it became increasingly difficult because the stones you had to jump from became 1 m ord more in size. You get cross this riverbed half the way this days route (just before the olive plantation).
