Itinerary description
Another Katharo plateau trail from end of them this time. After Avdeliako 500m is sign to timios stauros church, follow them. Cross the flatland and continue with the signs for Timios stauros, you start now to see E4 signs, follow and that! Before church 100m you see on turn info map of E4,park ,trail start thear.
The truth is, clean path make trails simple game. You start walk with E4 signs and after the path is for donkeys! Very very old path, that who connect Lasithi with Katharo. Make round by side afentami area and in half hour you watch all Lasithi plateau .Now start descent with red signs and continue with wild dirt road down and down to aghia Pelagia church. E4 signs or red signs everywhere make life very simple.
Then right until midlle of 'Lake' and then a small detour by fences. Then again dirt road to the entrance of gorge.
First km in gorge is not so impressive.Path until one point and after, slowly slowly, sides close and the game with stones and rocks start. After a while you met the first climb point, ok. Jumping continue and the first 'fresh' sliding stones appear. Then second and harder climb point and at 100m is the end at unigue 'Neraidokolimpos'. A big round as ball rock together with the small lake (neraidokolimpos*) make it imposible to continue.
Sight ofcorse is amazing and worth to see it, just careful with slidings.
Return until the starting point of very nice path(red signs) going up to asfentami and timios stauros and ascent start. 1 hour from the river to starting point with 10m break under oaks at asfentami.
Epilogue: Clear path make difrent and life simple and nice. If is not E4 sign is red signs. Gorge is full of stone towers and path obvious. Nice trail with the most dificult part at abrutly dirt road at descent to Lasithi plateau until aghia Pelagia, and the second climb point but with attention is ok.
* Neraida is naiad, water nymph.Kolympos call in crete the small lakes from rain.
