Itinerary description
Kareri village to Kareri lake and back down the Raeel Kareri Lake Trail.
2nd May 2018
Riding in an old battered car we reached Kareri village from Mcleod Ganj. We camped here with Chiraag an amazingly positive person, a few minutes with him and you will be filled with such positive energy that you would want to climb the highest mountain around. When we camped with him he was just days away from starting his cafe called the "Himalayan Musaafir" being a local boy who came back after working in a multinational company to live life on his terms he connects with travellers who come looking to the mountains for the missing link combined with his insight and knowledge of the local area he brings to life the endless possibilities everyone possesses.
About the GPS track- I had initially forgotten to switch on the GPS so I had to manually make a track from the starting point till the waypoint where I have specified accurate track starts here. Another important note as me and my partner did this trek without a guide we started following wrong tracks in a couple of places I have marked the major one where we were lost for almost 4 hours when we finally decided to backtrack till we could see a path down to the water.
When we were at Kareri Lake and had talked to the locals about route not one person had anything positive to say, we were advised very strongly not to go without a guide and were told stories of leopard and bears and in the end just before we started down the path we found two local boys who were chilling at the top of the open grass field just South East of Kareri Lake where one can catch the elusive mobile signal in these parts. These two convinced us to such a length of the dangers ahead that we turned back, where their emphasis was on the bear what got us was the danger of thum bhatak jaogay bena guide kai ( you will get lost without a guide).
Walking downhill back towards the Lake made us formulate a plan to push ahead and we turned back towards the track, the rest is a story talked over some hot coffee .
