Itinerary description
This hike starts in Kardamyli, going up the Viros Gorge for about 5 km as far as Sotiros Monastery, then climbs out of the gorge on a good road and descends to Kardamyli via Agia Sofia church. There's no path in the gorge; you walk on cobbles in the dry riverbed. The walking is not difficult, but it's often slow. You pass a number of caves in the canyon walls. The landscape at first isn't dramatic, but the gorge narrows and deepens as you ascend, with overhanging walls draped with stalactites.
There are a few places where blue/white paint blazes direct you out of the riverbed onto a path, but these just seem to be for high water conditions, and it's easier to remain in the riverbed. Sotiros Monastery is apparently unoccupied, and was all locked up. The climb out of the gorge is on a road, and you stay on roads until Agia Sofia. Beyond that, it's mostly kalderimi paths back to Kardamyli.
