Kap Arkona underneath the cliffs

In Putgarten you have to leave your car at the paid parking at the entrance of the village. Unless you have a special authorization you can't drive further in the village. After leaving the parking you walk in the main street of Putgarten. After ± 800 m you turn right. This street (Vitter Weg) will lead you to the small fishing village of Vitt. Just before the village there is a chapel which you can visit. In Vitt the normal path is above the cliffs. To see more of the coast and to avoid the crowd we followed the shore underneath the cliffs. Avoid high tide (see e.g. https://nl.tideschart.com/Germany/Mecklenburg--Vorpommern/Glowe/ ). To avoid falling rocks, you should also avoid rainy or windy days. There's only one somewhat difficult part. You'll come accross a paved dike : see the third picture (in the distance) and the fourth picture. If it's dry and you feel comfortable, you can just follow this dike. After a short while the dike becomes more steep. If you don't feel comfortable here anymore you can climb to the bush where you'll find a small path. In the bush you'll also find the remains of an old staircase (see waypoint). It's in a bad shape, so you shouldn't follow it. When you see the staircase, the dike has already become somewhat less steep and it's advised to follow here the dike again. Beyond this point, there aren't any difficulties anymore. The more people you'll see, the closer you come to a second parking which you can reach using a staircase in good shape. From that parking you can return by following the combined cycling & walking path above the cliffs till you reach the 2 light houses. From there you follow the main road back to the centre of Putgarten and the parking.
