Itinerary description

Cyprus may not boast a great many lakes, but with plenty of glistening dams around the country, there are a great number of spots to just kick back and relax by the water’s edge come winter. And if you’re looking for a place where gorgeous pine trees fringe iridescent waters, head through the lush Paphos Forest and veer towards the lesser known Asprogia – Kannaviou dam.

The village of Kannaviou is located in the province of Pafos. Yes, the village's name comes from what you suspect. In the past there was too much cannabis (kannavouri)!
In history, cannabis, which was abundant in the village, was used to make ropes, twine, nets and cloths from the plant fibers. However, there was no cannabis was left to remind the old ones, only vineyards that are abundant, olive trees, grapefruit, oak trees and plane trees.
Do not miss a walk to Asprogia-Kannaviou Dam, see the beautiful forest of Pafos that starts from there, and also visit the chapel of Panagia Chryseleousa, at a point that offers panoramic views of Kannaviou. The beautiful picnic site of Kannaviou , with the tall plantains, which is crossed by the river Ezousa, the 6th largest on the island, can relax you.

At the highest point, the route offers wonderful images of the village of Panagia, Akamas' peninsula, Pafos Forest and Troodos Mountains. The route goes through vineyards and gives a choice of two directions toward the end.
One leads to the Monastery of Our Lady Chrysorrogiatissa and then to the village of Panagia. The other, shorter, leading directly to the village. There is also access to Vouni's fire lookout station.
Pano Panagia:
The (Pano) Panagia is a stone village 35 km northeast of Paphos, wchich borders the Paphos Forest and is very close to the artificial lake of the dam Kannaviou. There are also a small number of quality wineries in the region where you can go for wine tasting and have a memorable time.
I consider this route as one of the ten best in Cyprus. That is because of the altitude that makes it suitable for hiking all year round. The explorer walks and lives the changing times literally in the vineyards.
Vineyards in Vouni Panagias:
Most of the hiking is done through the vineyards.
On the way there are also styrakes (steratzies) and kokkinomosfilies (Crataegus monogyna). The hike is on dirt roads, a relatively high altitude, rising 300 meters of altitude at the starting point (usually the village Panagia) to over 1,100 meters.
The route is ideal for hiking even in summer during the morning and late in the afternoon due to the presence of cool air. In winter you may encounter snow or fog, which adds even more variety thyself to see, hear and feel the explorers when walking.
View of the Dam Kannaviou:
When the day is clear, the walkers can see clearly even Akamas peninsula. There are unusual rock formations and excellent view towards the Valley of Ezousa and to Paphos Forest (and Xeros River Valley).
The route goes past the chapel of Prophet Elias. Hikers can choose longer routes that go through the monasteries Chrysorrogiatissa and the Holy Monastery.
Start Point: Pano Panagia village, across the cultural center near the church
End Point: Pano Panagia village
Estimated Duration: 3 hours
Difficulty Rate: Category 3: High degree of difficulty trail Route with difficult terrain such as very steep gradient (uphill and / or downhill), course in particularly rough and / or slippery, and / or steep terrain. Not suitable for young children.
Trip Length: 9.8 Km

To build dam builders did open here a stone mine, this is why this road is so good, used by heavy vehicles
