March held on Tuesday, July 21, 2015
NOTICE: It is understood that anyone who wants to do this same route assumes the responsibility that an activity entails that is not exempt from possible risks or incidents, in an environment in which common sense and circumstances can make the difference between having a good day or the opposite.
From Homer we have taken the highway "Skyline" that goes to Kachemak. At one point, and although they are under construction, as in so many other parts of Alaska, the asphalt is finished and from here we only find miles and miles of dirt tracks, which, however, are traveled as if it were asphalt. Although the travel guides advise against it (according to them due to the hostility of the people who live here), we have not paid the slightest attention and we are heading to one of the most isolated and immersed areas and anchored in a distant past of all this huge bay. It is an ultra-Orthodox community, made up mainly of descendants of the ancient Russian settlers, whose appearance and clothing already impact us visually. Because of the way they dress and behave, both men and women seem to be the Russian version of the “Amish”, who have amused us in so many movies. The truth is that until we found the place we wanted to reach, we were lost for a while, and not even the car's GPS was able to locate us. In that time we have come across some of these inhabitants, and although they do not seem very sociable or open to anything that comes from the outside world, however, they have not seemed aggressive to us; although perhaps we have not given them the opportunity to do so either. Finally we managed to get to the cemetery of that community, and if things get bad we have thought “hell, what better place”. Here we are in the small space that there is to park, on a fairly steep slope of land, some transport trailers for horses, and it is that an old couple of inhabitants of Homer (these normal), who were walking the dog, have told us that in this area there is the possibility of horseback riding (perhaps because you have to run away). Our group, made up of eight friends, is not willing to give in to anything or anyone, and even more so after having lived so many adventures together. Hence we set foot on land and walk in the direction of the beach of said Kachemak Bay. The first section of half a kilometer runs south and descends steeply to the very edge of the beach. This section is resolved by making two or three fairly pronounced z's, until you reach said beach. We can see that the tide is receding noticeably and that the cold waters have receded several kilometers. But what is most impressive is the mountain range that we have right in front of us, still with a lot of snow, and in which the Greenwich Glacier stands out over three or four others. On the beach there are horse tracks and off-road tracks, and as we can see a kilometer and a half later, there is still another town almost on the edge of the bay, also Russian and even smaller than the previous ones, in which a “keep out” sign, which makes it very clear that we are not welcome at all. We avoid this area, to continue another kilometer and a half along the edge of said Kachemak Bay, with the opportunity to see a couple of pairs of American bald or white-headed eagles, which delight us with their strident sounds and spectacular flights. They have nests and although they have come quite close, even posing for photographs, however we do not want to disturb the chicks, which are already large and can be seen in both nests. Finally we reach the edge of a river, which goes down somewhat higher and would force us to wade through it getting wet, which as it does not attract us; We decided to replenish our strength next to the singing watercourse. While we eat, and already on the way back, the group of horsemen who had a certain advantage returned, as well as a couple of fishermen in their pickup. The way back is done exactly the same route as on the way out, without any noteworthy incident occurring at the end, and therefore we had to use the cemetery, which we arrived at three hours later, recovering the car and returning to Homer.
