Itinerary description
We started our walk from our accommodation at Ammareen Bedouin camp at Al Bayda.
Little Petra, also known as Siq al-Barid, is a fascinating historical site in Jordan that’s often overshadowed by its more famous counterpart, Petra.
Location: Little Petra is located about 6 kilometers north of the main Petra archaeological site.
History: It was part of an important Nabataean trading base and served as a resting point for caravans traveling along the ancient spice and incense routes.
Unique Features:
Triclinium: The most prominent feature in Little Petra is the Triclinium, a rock-cut building with three benches (hence the name) where travelers would rest and dine.
Mural Paintings: The Triclinium’s interior walls are adorned with unique murals depicting scenes of feasting, dancing, and other social activities.
Water Channels: Little Petra also has a sophisticated water collection and distribution system, similar to Petra.
Atmosphere: Unlike Petra, which can get crowded, Little Petra offers a more intimate and peaceful experience.
Exploring Little Petra
Entrance: The entrance to Little Petra is through a narrow gorge, reminiscent of Petra’s famous Siq. As you walk through, you’ll be surrounded by towering sandstone cliffs.
Triclinium: The highlight of Little Petra is undoubtedly the Triclinium. Take your time to admire the intricate carvings and the well-preserved murals inside. Imagine ancient travelers resting here after their long journeys.
Cave Dwellings: Explore the nearby caves and dwellings. Some of these were used as living quarters, while others served as storage spaces.
Views: Climb up to the higher levels for panoramic views of the surrounding desert landscape. The vistas are especially beautiful during sunrise and sunset.
Back Door Trail: If you’re up for a hike, consider taking the Back Door Trail from Little Petra to the Monastery in Petra. It’s a scenic route that avoids the crowds and offers stunning vistas along the way.
Practical Tips:
Tickets: Little Petra ticket entry is Free, please dont pay anyone..
Guided Tours: You can hire a local guide who can provide historical context and share interesting stories about the site.
Timing: Visit early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and crowds.
Shoes: Wear comfortable shoes, as there’s some walking involved.
Remember, Little Petra may be smaller than Petra, but its historical significance and unique features make it a must-visit for history enthusiasts and curious travelers alike.
