Itinerary description
Jezevac (Hedgehog) peak is a popular hike in the Homolije mountains. It is less high than the Mali and Veliki Vukan hike, so a bit easier.
You can do a few different versions of this hike. The most popular version is to simply go from Gornjak Monastery to Jezevac peak and go back down the way you came. The trail is well marked and it's a pretty hike, so this is a good option. There are good facilities, including clean bathrooms, at the Gornjak Monastery.
As we hiked from the Monastery to the peak, we skipped a path to a viewpoint where you look back down to the Monastery. That would be nice to do too. You will see the sign to 'Vidikovac Gornjak' if you want to take this detour.
Instead of returning the way we came, we took the 'yellow trail' from the peak back down to the road. As we were hiking in winter it was muddy. Mostly manageable, but bad in a few places. Luckily there are sticks everywhere to use as poles for extra stability. It is also a bit steeper than the ascent. It might be easier to do the hike in reverse and climb up this way, but you would need to keep turning around at key points not miss the great views!
The only downside is this part of the hike is near a mine, which was noisy. The trail is well marked the whole way.
We did this hike on a winter day with gentle rain, it was fine - so I'd say a decent hike for any time of year.
One final thing - to make it a loop, don't stop at the trout restaurant for a meal and beer like we did - keep walking along the road. You will pass a cool looking old monastery built into the side of the cliff face. It's about an extra 3km, but all flat.
