THE TRAVEL
Crossing Nazareth and Capernaum (Sea of Galilee) following the Jesus Trail (Camí de Jesús), a signposted route of 78 kilometers.
It is a journey through private initiative that attempts to step on the areas of greatest historical and scenic interest located between Nazareth and the sea of Galilee, spaces that Jesus traveled during his gospel years.
For a few years now there has also been an alternative route, the Gospel Trail, a public route that originated in Nazareth via the Mont Precipice (southern Nazareth) and ending in Capernaum. The great difference between them is in the first part, where the Gospel Trail crosses more natural zones (it has a variant from Canà). Instead, do not visit Zippori's PN.
BRANDS
The path is marked perfectly, with paint marks every few meters that make tracking the route very easy. Brands can adapt different shapes.
The classic brand is the one of painting BLANCA-TARONJA-BLANCA. We can also find orange arrows and when the Jesus Trail coincides with other trails (Israel Trail), we will see the mark as an orange point on the trail mark.
ETAPES
The crossing can be done comfortably in four stages:
1st stage: Nazareth - Zippori NP - Cannà (19.6 km, +550 m / -660 m) (-4 km if not visited Zippori NP)
The stage crosses the neighborhoods of Nazareth and Canan, areas without much interest and habitually dirty. The route passes through the Zippori NP entrance. It is worthwhile to enter the ruins and visit them even though it means making 2 kilometers to the ruins area. In Canà you can visit a couple of churches (Catholic and Orthodox) that refer to the miracle of the wedding of Cana.
The towns of Canà and Nazareth are connected by buses that circulate throughout the day and connect both cities within minutes. The first stage, if you wish, you can go back to sleep in Nazareth and take the next day another bus to Canà to resume the trip.
ATTENTION : When we made the route (from 2018), the road between Nazareth and Zippori was under construction (split). The track may have variations depending on how these works ultimately affect the itinerary.
2nd stage: Cannà - Kibbutz LavI (15.6 km, +380 m / -300 m)
It is the less interesting stage of the trail. Although on the outskirts of Canan the path runs through a beautiful forest, the Golani Interchange traversal makes the route uninterrupted. At this junction of freeways we will find a controversial McDonald's, as well as the Golani brigade memorial site, dedicated to this brigade of the Israeli army.
Of interest is the stay at Kibbutz Lavi. Requests for installation are requested in advance. Attention, which is an Orthodox hotel. This means that it does not open on Saturdays, and on Fridays we will have to check in before noon. As a curiosity, the elevators have the "Sabbath" button, to make them work all day up and down so that they do not break one of the precepts of this Jewish holiday.
Stage 3: Kibbutz Lavi - Arbel (20.4 km, +450 m / -690 m)
Interesting stage, probably the best. The Horns of Hattin mountain is an extinct volcano, with cows grazing there (December).
On the northern slopes, it's worth going to Nabi Shueib, a monastery of the Druze religious minority that we can visit if there is no religious act (1.1 km go and return).
4th stage: Arbel - Cafarnaüm (23 km, + 470m / -680m)
The Arbel PN is undoubtedly the star of the crossing. A narrow gorge located below sea level flanked by the slopes of the Arbel (+ 116m) and the Nitai (+ 98m). You must pay for entry to get there. You can not enter before the opening, and in case of bad weather, you can close it. In this case (or if you do not want to pay) you can follow an alternative path (green marks) that comes near the synagogue and that it goes through the fine gorilla to Ein Arbel (source) where both options converge.
