Itinerary description

Seen from afar, the 2185m Kaiseregg is the highest mountain around Lake Schwarz and it’s considered a classic as far as tours go in the Freiburg Alps.
There are several possible start points for this trail. Directly from Lake Schwarz, by the mountain station of the Riggisalp chairlift – and on from here via Salzmatt to the notorious Kaiseregg; but I decided to make it way longer by starting and finishing in Jaun.
You don't need to follow the signs from Jaun (unless you prefer to do it anticlockwise). Since the beginning you start going up, for more than two hours while you can contemplate the amazing panorama and fauna.
After reaching Golmly I realized that the next section would be in a alpine trail. There are no chains or stairs, but there are a couple of moments where I had to go use the hands to secure myself and some other moments where you could feel that the cliff is too close. Obviously if you like via ferratas or similar, this will feel like nothing, but if you were just expecting a "regular" mountain hike, this could be a bit challenging.
The approximately 700-meter climb in altitude requires a pretty good level of fitness and certainly being foot-sure to top it! Once at the top all efforts are duly rewarded with fantastic views of both the Bernese and Valais Alps. The way back down is via Alp Salzmatt. From here you head for the valley station of Kaiseregg mountain rail and finally back down to Lake Schwarz.
The way back I also decided not to take the indicated path as you should go up quite a lot before heading down to Jaun. Therefore I decided to take a more flattish path crossing the valley, which was also a bit shorter.
There are not many fountains around, so make sure that you have enough.
It's not really that difficult, apart from the couple of challenging sections on the alpine trail but I'm rating it that way as 28 km with almost 2000 meters unevenness is not for everyone.
