Kozija ćuprija (Goat's bridge)

Goat's Bridge is located in the canyon of the Miljacka River, a few kilometers east of old town Sarajevo. The road which spans the river was the famous "Istanbul road", which, during the Ottoman Empire went from Sarajevo to the eastern parts of the Empire, and all the way to Istanbul. Goat's Bridge is one of four old bridges in the city which are still preserved. The other three bridges are Šeherćehaja bridge, the Latin Bridge and the Roman Bridge. / This bridge has a single arch with two circular openings. It is 42 meters long and 4.75 meters wide. The range of its arch is 17.5 m. It is built of limestone and tuff. / In the Ottoman era, Goat's Bridge was the place where each new imperial governor (vizier) was welcomed. For this major occasion, all the prominent people in Sarajevo would come out, and the common people would also assemble. It is said that some of the bolder boys would jump from the bridge into the Miljacka for the vizier, and he would present them in return with gifts of money. (This feat of jumping is admirable, because the Miljacka at this location does not have a lot of depth, and the bridge is very high.) / There are folk legends about the origin of this bridge. It is said that a poor shepherd herding goats noticed that his animals would stay for an unusually long time at some bushes near the river. When he look a better looks under the bushes, he found a pot of gold coins. This money paid for his schooling, and after many years, whe nhe became a prominent and wealthy citizen of the Empire, he decided to build a bridge over the Miljacka in the same place where his goats led him to gold. However, today it is considered more likely that this bridge was created during one of the major road building campaigns, at the time of Mehmed Pasha Sokolovic (Grand Vizier from 1565-1579). At that time, the Empire also built other famous bridges in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Arslanagića Bridge near Trebinje, the Old Bridge in Mostar, and the famous bridge crossing the Drina River in Visegrad. / Today Goat's Bridge is a place where people come to relax and enjoy the surrounding nature. A walking trail along the Miljacka River leads from Dariva, near City Hall, to the bridge itself. This bridge is a national monument in Bosnia & Herzegovina.

Trebević Protected Landscape

The mountain stretches southeast – northwest. The Trebević massif and its ridges are approx 12km long and 8km wide. Its highest peak rises to 1629 m. Trebević has five ridges stretching along SE – NW. The Trebević River and Miljacka Canyon are at the northern and northeastern end of Trebević Mountin; its southern and southwestern portions are Mali i Veliki Stupanj (1522m), Crni vrh (1522m), Veliki Oštrik (1472m) and Mali Oštrik (1453m) which separate it from Jahorina Mountain, Kasindolski Creek in the south, and Sarajevsko Plain in the west.  / Trebević is an important tourist and recreational site largely destroyed during the recent war. A paved road and a cable car (1700 m distance; currently not operating) link Trebevic picnic area with downtown Sarajevo. Its topographic terrain features were ideal for the installment of a combined bobsleigh/luge track where Trebević hosted bobsled races during XIV Winter Olympic Games in 1984. / In 1975, a 60 m tall radio tower was built near the peak, at 1566 m. It is the only telecommunications relay to have survived the 1995 NATO bombing campaign. It is an important communications node for Saraјevo and a broadcast transmitter for many Radio and TV stations.
