Itinerary description
A pretty and varied descent to Ituren and the river valley below, over-shadowed by our mountain Mendaur (1100m) to the north (every valley has its own mountain). Every year on el Dia de la Trinidad in June, the local villagers make a pilgrimage to the chapel at the summit of Mendaur and then hold a festival on the banks of the reservoir below the summit.
This walk from the house descends along old paths lined with chestnut trees (once – so my neighbours informed me – the home of many badger sets) with extensive views of the villages and homesteads of the Malerreka valley to the north. After 1km through the pine woods the track turns off along a tiny path around a small valley head, through oak woods and over tumbling streams, before entering an area of bordas (the home of donkeys, pigs and sheep) and gradually piecing its way down to the hamlet of Latsaga on the outskirts of Ituren and into Ituren Village square. The return route is via the old school path that my neighbours used to walk down as children to school in Ituren (where they were inevitably punished for speaking Basque). This is a fairly steep zig zag uphill through pine woods and past a borda which my neighbours said used to be the hiding place of Portuguese refugees during Franco’s times.
The Ituren walk can be extended with the Ituren Village Tour (4 km). There is also a high level loop from Ituren to the summit of Mendaur. The Mendaur/Elgorriaga Loop (17.8km).
