Itinerary description
When erosion becomes creative and constructive!
Thanks to our school's participation in the Comenius "Let Stones Speak" project and our collaboration with the Safe Mountain Foundation of Courmayeur, pupils from the 2nd and 3rd forms spent a day discovering the geological wonders of an area not so far from the school. This geosite is an immense deposit of glacial origin which, along with other factors, contributed to a fascinating geomorphological phenomenon: that of the badlands and the earth pyramids of Saint Nicolas.
HOW TO GET THERE:
By bus from Aosta (15 km) or from Courmayeur (20 km) to Saint Pierre, where you have to catch another bus for Saint Nicolas that takes you along 8 km. of panoramic road. Price: Aosta - St. Nicolas
WHERE TO STAY: There are no youth hostels in the area and most accommodation is quite expensive. Therefore, we recommend campsites, which are located in very attractive areas, have many amenities and are cheap. The low summer season is May, June and September. High summer season is July and August:
Camping Arvier - http://www.campingarvier.com/
Price: from 4 to 9 euros p.p.
Camping Monte Bianco, Sarre - http://www.campingmontebianco.it/eng/benvenuti.asp
Price: from 3 to 9 euro p.p.

Saint Pierre is easy to reach by public transport, either from Courmayeur (20 km ) or from the city of Aosta (10 km). At Saint Pierre we changed buses. The second bus took us to the picturesque town of Saint Nicolas (8 km), from where we began our hike to view the badlands and pyramids from many different angles. Our guide was the geologist Ms. Elena Motta, who works for the Safe Mountain Foundation. She began our excursion by explaining how the Badlands were formed.
