Itinerary description
This is an official track from the Department Of Conservation New Zealand: Isthmus Peak Track.
We leave the car at a small parking next to the road, on the right-hand side when driving north.
To get to the start of the track we need to cross the road and walk south on the road for about 200 meters.
Right at the start you will find a toilet and there is another toilet at about 6 Km into the track.
For the first 2 Km you'll be walking on a narrow track and then the track joins a 4WD track. All the way up you will enjoy fantastic views of lake Hawea.
A bit further from the higher toilet, about 700 meters, you'll find a junction where you need to make a right turn. From this point you can already see the ridge that will take you to the summit.
On the summit ridge we need first to go down a bit and then our final gentle ascent to the Isthmus Peak summit. From the summit ridge we get our first glimpse of lake Wanaka and from the top the views of lake Wanaka are magnificent. You can also see all the way down to the road.
To go back we follow the same track that took us to the summit.
In summary, easy track, quite steep indeed, with superb views of both lake Hawea and lake Wanaka.
IMPORTANT NOTICE from the DOC site: This track is annually closed for fawning between November 20th and December 20th.

Wonderful view all the way up and at the summit. The route is quite steep most of the way.
