Route made by the hiking group SERMAR.
To start the route we arrive to the town of TRSTENIK where we embark in the direction of the island of MLJET. After one hour of travel we disembark on the island in PUERTO POLACE, the main port for the stopover of the tourist ferries.
Mljet or Meleda (in Latin: Melita) is an island of volcanic origin, with numerous ravines and gorges. According to the 2001 census the island has a population of 1,111 inhabitants.
The beauty of nature and the endless hills and turquoise blue sea make Mljet a unique place on the Adriatic coast.
On the western part of the "green" island is the national park of Mljet which was founded as the fourth national park of Croatia, after Plitvice, Paklenica and Risnjak, on November 11, 1960.
In Puerto Polace we begin to walk in SW direction and immediately SSE by a track that is introduced little by little by the extensive vegetation. 72% of the island is covered in forest.
After walking for 1 km we come to a fork that we take to our left (SE direction). Another 150 meters more and we enter by a path that continues ascending South.
We follow the path to crown in MONTOKUC. We have walked 2.5 km away and we have reached 255 meters of altitude. Here we find a nice viewpoint with great views over the national park. Views of a turquoise blue sea, of the Great and Small lakes with their small channels that communicate them with the open sea and of the island of Santa María that is inside the Great Lake, of the maritime ports, of its geological structure formed by limestone and dolomite forming crests and slopes, of its formidable vegetation ...
Add that the few depressions on the island of Mljet are below sea level and are known as blatine ("mud lakes") or slatine ("salt lakes"). During the rainy seasons, the mud lakes are filled with water, but during the summer, it becomes brackish.
From here we begin to descend in a southerly direction along a zigzag path that leads to another track. We take the fork on the right. In 350 mts we leave the track and we are introduced again by another track that zigzags in the direction of SOLINE locality that is next to the channel that connects Lake Grande with the sea.
After a short stop to regain strength, we continue in the NW direction following the paved road and in a few meters continue along a path next to the water.
In about 900 meters we reach a beautiful bridge, the Puente Grande, we pass the bridge and continue along the path that borders the Lake Grande for 1.7 km to reach another asphalt track.
We walk along the asphalted track for about 600 meters where we take a small ferryboat (boat) that takes us to the islet of Santa María where the Benedictine monastery of Santa María, from the 16th century, is located. XII. The Benedictines became the feudal lords of the island in 1151. They arrived at the coast in the Sutmiholjska cove and the Serbian prince Desa of the House of Vojislavljevic built and donated the church and monastery of St. Mary to them on the islet in the Big Lake (1187-1198). The Benedictines renounced their dominion over the island in 1345, leaving only a third of the land.
In 1809, during the reign of Napoleon, the monastery of Mljet was dissolved. When Austria took over the island, the forestry office was placed in the building. Between the two world wars, the building was owned by the Bishopric of Ragusa (Dubrovnik). In 1960 it became a hotel and in 1998 it was returned to the bishopric.
The monastery of Mljet is an authentic wonder hidden in a unique place full of vegetation and lakes.
The architecture of the building is Romanesque, but you can distinguish perfectly Renaissance and Baroque additions. Within the enclosure of the monastery, it is possible to be contemplated also the church of Santa Maria, that was constructed more or less in the same time.
The most beautiful thing is to take a walk around, since in addition to contemplating the monastery from all angles, you can enjoy a spectacular landscape.
After a short break we take another ferry that takes us north to the pier of the Small Bridge. We disembark and continue next to Little Lake in North direction.
A few meters further on we leave the signpost to Pomena and continue along the shore of the lake until reaching some steps that in about 500 meters leave us in the town of POMENA.
In Pomena we take the boat that in another hour of travel returns us to TRSTENIK.
