The Dingle Peninsula, sometimes Corkaguiney is located in County Kerry being the westernmost point of Ireland. The largest city on the peninsula is Dingle, with approximately 2,000 inhabitants. It is bordered to the east by the Slieve Mish mountain range (Ghost Mountain). To the west of its western end are the Blasket Islands, currently uninhabited.
The Gulf Stream reaches the peninsula, providing it with unusual local flora and fauna.1
The Dingle Peninsula has a deep association with Saint Brendan, who is said to have set sail from Mount Brandon to America, passing through Iceland and Greenland on a sailboat made of slats and leather.
National Geographic has described it as "the most beautiful place on earth" for the green landscape, the rocky hills and the amazing cliffs.
The area is one of the most widely used Gaelic locations in Ireland. Proof of this is that many of the most important authors in this language are from the area, such as Ó Siochfhradha and Peig Sayers among others.
The majority of David Lean's 1970 film Ryan's Daughter was shot in its surroundings.
Numerous prehistoric and late medieval sites have been found in the area such as the Gallarus Oratory, the Iron Age Fort Dunbeg or the ruins of the 7th century Riasc monastery.
